Glastonbury Gig Guide W/C 16th November 17

Welcome to the gig guide magazine for Glastonbury. My aim is to bring out a weekly event guide to cover upcoming gigs. We have an abundance of music in this town and events of excellent quality so I hope this is of use.

Gig of the week

Glastonbury Carnival- Saturday 18th November

Well not a gig as such but this fantastic event will bring music, dance and colour to Glastonbury. For those who have never seen the carnival before this isn’t like the one in your town with a few kids on the back of a tractor trailer and endless cars and vans with local businesses written on them.
You will be blown away by the spectacle and unbelievable work and effort that has gone into these wonderful displays. If you have been before I can’t really say anything else but enjoy the party.

Feature

Imprints-The Exchange-Bristol
Imprints are an act that have really kicked on after winning the Underdog Final just over a year ago. They are now a sought-after act to play festivals all over the country and had an amazing year topped off at Boomtown with their show there.
After a month off following a busy summer Imprints played their first gig in Bristol for a while and this was a Friday night headline slot at the Exchange. It was very busy with a great crowd and Imprints gave the crowd a great workout with their relentless folk/pirate /punk. A full hour and ¾ set was stunning and included many favourites like Pirates and Thieves and Ravens plus many new songs. A fantastic gig which left many of the crowd crawling out on their hands and knees.

Friday 17th November

The Cactus Blossoms w/ support from Mark J.Lee - Hy Brasil - Bristol
The Cactus Blossoms bring a new energy and vitality to a classic sound with their blood harmonies and instantly memorable songs — they’re often compared to the Everly Brothers. Rolling Stone writes, “there’s no getting around it: You’re Dreaming is pretty damn dreamy” and Garden & Gun magazine says, “the brothers’ transcendent harmonies shine throughout and the slippery, spooky guitar work gives You’re Dreaming a stamp of authenticity, despite hailing from the frozen tundra of the North Star State.

Featured performing their song “Mississippi” live at the Bang Bang Bar on the third episode of Twin Peaks, the band premiered their own video for the song with NPR’s All Songs TV. Filmed in the icy waters of their native Minnesota, the band's haunting, reverb-drenched harmonies and the song's subject matter -- the protagonist makes a jump into the cold, dark waters of the Mississippi -- "perfectly captures the strange unease and surreal mystery Twin Peaks is known for"(NPR). The track appears on their debut Red House album, You’re Dreaming, and is also featured on the Twin Peaks soundtrack due out September 8.

The Cactus Blossoms and their band have been touring hear and abroad this summer, including an appearance at London’s Hyde Park (with Kings of Leon) as well as festival dates.

Mark J. Lee is a Country singer, guitar player and producer from South Devon UK. Inspired by classic country sounds from Nashville to Bakersfield with a style that is both original and in step with the golden era of country songwriting.

As well as taking cues from Willie Nelson, Gram Parsons, Buck Owens and Hank Williams Snr. he reaches further to the writings of Leonard Cohen, Ernest Hemmingway and Kurt Vonnegut for thematic and poetic guidance. The result is a clear and distinct voice laced with hope, humour and a cathartic cynicism that stands apart from the industry approved themes we have grown to accept from this end of the musical spectrum.

Mark J. Lee honed his trademark laconic delivery and self effacing onstage humour through ten years of performing across the UK and Europe with Howlin' Lord the country,psyche-rock,boogie,garage band he fronted alongside working with other country and rock'n'roll acts in and around his adopted home of Bristol on guitar and piano or as a cowriter and producer.

More recently Mark J. Lee collaborated with production duo The Insects on a version of trad folk song 'A Lyke Wake Dirge' for the soundtrack to the BBC drama series 'The Living and the Dead' hailed The Guardian as 'Our new National Anthem'.

Shawn James and The Shapeshifters/ The Thatchers - The Cobblestones- Bridgwater
Shawn James & The Shapeshifters are a 5 piece heavy blues rock band from Fayetteville, Arkansas. Their brand of hard hitting electrified dirty delta blues rock combined with Shawn's soulfully roaring vocals make for an intense listening experience whether playing the records or seeing them live.
With their busy tour schedule, you can catch them playing festivals and shows all over the world or hear their music featured on Discovery Channel, NBC, and other media platforms.

The Thatchers With their very well received debut album 'Whiskey Tales' released in 2015
alongside a very ambitious UK tour, which saw them play alongside some legendary acts and perform at high status venues, it is very clear that this band are set on making themselves heard.
In 2016 the band continued with on going touring duties while hitting the studio in August to record their four track EP 'Fall From Grace' which was released in December of that year.

Scaling down a little from the normal all dayer format All Roads Lead To Frome returns for a special night on our "I Knew Frank Turner Before He Was Famous" stage.

We present a night of the best acoustic acts the scene has to offer including a very special headliner from across the pond.

We are delighted to say that the incredible Billy Pettinger (AKA Billy The Kid) will be headlining this free entry event.

For those of you don't know Billy is an incredible singer songwriter from Canada now based in America. Previous UK tours have seen her tour with the likes of Against Me, Frank Turner, Chuck Regan and Northcote. This is one of only 5 UK shows, Billy's last show in the UK was in 2014 playing XFM's Winter Wonderland with Billy Bragg, Catfish & The Bottlemen, The Horrors, Frank Turner & Royal Blood at Brixton Academy!
