Glastonbury Calling 2018 Guide

Glastonbury Calling 2018 Guide

Hi, welcome to the 2018 planner. This is the place with all of the line ups and times of each venue so you can plan your day out for the event. Well that’s if you’re like me and really like to know who, when and where you will be watching.
If you’re of the disposition of going with the flow in this guide you can still use this to listen or watch all of the acts to get a flavour of each venue.
Glastonbury Calling is in it’s 3rd year and we are really pleased with the success of the first two and thanks to you for joining in our event to show off to you some of the established and up and coming acts in the local area. We have 6 venues this year and your wristbands will get you into all of these. Just be aware that if there is someone you really want to see please get there early as it’s a multi venue event and we may have to operate a one in one out policy once a venue is full. Please be aware each venue has it’s own individual age restrictions which are dictated by the venue.

Tickets are on sale at great value for £12 (they go up to £15 on the day) from Jaywalk Guitars in Street, The King Arthur in Glastonbury, The Bristol Ticket Shop and online at: http://www.glastonburymerch.co.uk/glastonbury-calling-6-c.asp

2330-0030 Banco De Gaia [DJ Set]

Banco De Gaia has been performing and releasing for over 25 years now, along the way becoming one of the music industry’s most maverick innovators. His legacy is as glittering as it is diverse, ranging from Hollywood film sound credits to the critically acclaimed ‘Last Train to Lhasa’, first released in 1995 to a rapturous reception. His live act still packs out venues and festivals all over the world, with audio-visual performances renowned for their explosive, cutting edge quality: from sampling wizardry fused with haunting vocals and poignant acoustics to genre-hopping musical instrumentals, all accompanied by socially engaged visuals.
Behind Banco de Gaia is artist Toby Marks. Starting out as a drummer in a metal band, he began using sampling kit to cut his own tunes after falling in love with electronica during the 1980s acid house era. By the early 90s, after winning respect for a clutch of credits on the Ambient Dub compilations, he was signed to Planet Dog Records and released ‘Maya’, in 1994, and then ‘Last Train to Lhasa’, in 1995.
Both albums featured an artfully arranged cocktail of textured samples and live instrumentals lifted from across the world. Both went straight to No. 1 in the UK Independent Charts as well as sweeping through the international electronica scene, making him, along with the likes of The Orb, one of the early pioneers of ‘chill out’. Both ‘Last Train to Lhasa’ and ‘Heliopolis (Eudopolis Dog Mix)’ notably featured on Sasha & Digweed's classic ‘Northern Exposure’ mix CD among myriad other compilations.
Since then, he's released a further 6 studio albums, 1 live album, 1 live DVD and 15 EP’s and also runs his own label, Disco Gecko Recordings. He went back to basics in 2014 with a sold-out 20th Anniversary CD-only (no streams or downloads available) release of ‘Maya’, followed by similar 20th Anniversary editions of ‘Last Train to Lhasa’ in 2015 and ‘Live at Glastonbury’ in 2016.
Pink Floyd and psychedelia remain a constant influence: Banco’s cover of Echoes in 2007 helped shape the ‘Memories, Dreams, Reflections’ collection in 2009 and Floyd’s legendary saxophonist Dick Parry was one of Marks’ special guest collaborators (alongside no-man’s Tim Bowness and Zero 7’s Sophie Barker) on his new album, ‘The 9th of Nine Hearts’, which came out in October 2016.
“A continuation of the consistently high form Toby Marks has shown throughout a long and illustrious career” (Total Music Magazine), The Crack described ‘The 9th of Nine Hearts’ as full of “dubby loveliness that fuses psych, spiky rock, acid and ambient” while the Ambient Music Guide hailed it as “Banco's strongest album of new material in 15 years”.

2200-2300 Talisman

Talisman were one of the UK's top Roots Reggae bands in the later 70's and early 80's.The band's prowess earned them support slots with acts as diverse as Burning Spear, The Clash and The Rolling Stones. They have reformed with the original line up after 30 years apart to support the re-release of their classic roots single ‘Dole Age’ on a brand new album 'Dole Age - The 1981 Reggae Collection'. One of Bristol's finest live acts are back and ready to party once again.
Originally formed in 1977 Talisman were consummate performers constantly vying for the title of one of the country's most popular live reggae bands. They toured the UK building up a loyal following and leaving memories of gigs that are still discussed to this day.
Until now the only way to hear Talisman has been to track down their two difficult to find singles from 1981, or their two later LPs, “Takin' The Strain” from 1984 and “Jam Rock” From 1990. Now after nearly thirty years Bristol Archive Records have lovingly compiled this CD of the band at their peak in 1981. Not only does the CD contain the band's two original 7” singles, but also eight carefully selected live cuts from classic shows at Glastonbury Festival and other infamous shows.
Hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed ‘The Bristol Reggae Explosion 1978-1983’ Bristol Archive Records release 'Dole Age - The 1981 Reggae Collection' celebrated at their first Bristol show for 20 years at The Fleece in Bristol on 27th May 2011.

“Vivacious and packed with infectious island melodies, the album is perfect for connoisseurs of real roots music.” – Tom Williams, Big Cheese Magazine
“For someone not into reggae, if there was ever a band that would convert me, Talisman would be that band!” – Mr. T, Lights Out Zine
“It’s the seven live tracks that impress the most, an audio document of a band at the peak of their prowess.” – Martin Headon, Red Hot Velvet

1815-1900 Lewis Poole

Lewis Poole began playing guitar in 2005, but preferred to write his own material instead of playing cover songs. In 2012 Lewis moved to Middlesbrough and slowly developed his sound from pop-punk to indie-pop emo. 2300-0000 Leylines

West-country collective established in 2013, with a genre-defying, eclectic sound that ranges from traditional folk to full blown festival rock. The Leylines are: Dan Thompson (electric guitar); Dave Burbidge (drums); Hannah Johns (violin); Matthew Wilkins (acoustic guitar); Sean Booth (bass); and Steve Mitchell (vocals/guitar).

The Leylines was founded by a group of musicians in Weston-super-Mare (via Bristol), wishing to combine their individual musical styles into something that isn’t quite folk, sort of punk, 100% heart-pounding revelry. This unique sound, combined with frontman Steve Mitchell’s lyrics centred around life on the road and the state of society, has launched the band into the heart of the live music community and made them firm favourites of the festival circuit.

The band released their debut album, ‘Along The Old Straight Track’ in June 2016, produced by Sean Lakeman, recorded at The Metway studios in Brighton and mixed by Al Scott. With this team on board, inevitably the record has drawn strong comparison to the likes of The Levellers, Mad Dog Mcrea and Ferocious Dog, whilst remaining an album by a band which have forged their own sound and identity.

With a fiercely loyal and ever-growing fan base, The Leylines guarantee to have their audiences up on their feet – and they will be having as much fun as their audience while they’re doing it!

2145-2230 Port Erin

Garnering near-cult status as purveyors of original genre-bending music, Port Erin are a band of three. Two brothers- Reuben Myles Tyghe, vocals and guitar, flanked by Jacob Myles Tyghe on bass and Cerys Brocklehurst on drums. They hail from Broughton Gifford (a very small village tucked away in South West England) and formed in January 2007.

The past decade has seen them extensively tour the U.K. performing over 600 shows at some of of the U.K.’s most prestigious venues. They have made appearances at many festivals including; Glastonbury Festival (‘10, ‘11, ‘13 & ’14 ), played live sessions for BBC Introducing and their music has been aired numerous times on BBC Radio 6.

Their musicality is magnetic with tightly wound dives and grooves. Cerys and Jacob’s rhythm section is a solid unit, Reuben drifts in-at times controlled and soulful but with moments of cornered fretting. A milieu of sonic textures are at play with echoes of jazz, coupled with mechanical Krautrock undertones. They are as punk as they are prog and as political as they are personal.

Port Erin draw inspiration from the likes of XTC, David Bowie, Miles Davis, Syd Arthur, Talking Heads, Morphine and Tortoise.

2016 saw the band perform alongside Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing) who conducted an electric improv set to an ecstatic audience. In December of the same year, Port Erin were hand-picked as the backing band for Nick Harper’s (son of legendary singer-songwriter, Roy Harper) U.K. tour which saw them play to raucous crowds across the country, culminating in a triumphant finale at The Borderline, Soho.

2017 brings the horizon of album four, Ocean Grey. Ten years distilled into six potent, extended, considered songs. Recorded in the Wiltshire studio of platinum producer and composer, Chris Hughes. Ocean Grey was tracked and mixed by long-time collaborator, Dominic Bailey-Clay (of Nine Volt Leap Recording Studio) following his past work on previous albums, Floating Above The City and Live 2015. Pete Judge of critically acclaimed jazz instrumental outfits, Get the Blessing(link text) and Dakhla plays trumpet aside long-standing collaborator, Simon Williams on saxophone.

Ocean Grey is an album of considered, quiet rage. Lyrically, it explores earth waning themes of displacement and loss yet solace emerges in the thinnest of glimmers.

2030-2115 Harry and the Gondolas

This Bristol-based trio benefits from Harry Gould’s lead vocals and guitar, Bubba Erikson’s buoyant bass lines and Sam Snell’s flawless harmonies and percussion... With influences such as Mumford and Sons, Bears Den and Ben Howard, it is clear why Harry and the Gondolas are the perfect accompaniment to go with that cold cider you’re craving. Their chilled nu-folk, acoustic sound and Gould’s deep resonating vocals carry the crowd toe tapping and hand clapping through fast-paced Irish-folk to mellow ballads
Their captivating strain of alternative folk found an enjoyable middle ground between tender, sparse acoustics and a fuller, Mumfordian, foot-stomping sound

Bound together and battle-hardened by an experience & appreciation of the fringes of British rock music, Anya Pulver, Tina Maynard & James Collins have already found their incendiary live shows selling out in dive bars and clubs across their native South West. With vocal lines that tangle & intertwine, riffs so substantial they’ve got their own post code, and a beat - provided by former Maybe she will drummer James Collins - that ties everything down with industrial power, this is a sound of colossal proportions.

Prepare for a lively set and make sure you've got a glass to raise for the drinking songs!!!"

2025-2110 Sean McGowan

Raised on a diet of The Clash, The Jam, Specials, Billy Bragg and other such politically-charged, punk-ignited British pop, 24 year old Southampton-born troubadour Seán McGowan had been playing up and down the UK for five years, and DIY released three EPs (given away / sold on a “pay what you want” basis at shows), before catching the ears of the music industry at 2013’s Great Escape festival.

0030-0130 Dr Meaker (DJ Set)

This info  is mainly about the band but it involves the history of Clive Meaker the  DJ. They started their journey as a Bristol based sound system comprising of electronic and acoustic musicians. The band soon built up a strong following and quickly gained the attention of the BBC resulting in a play of their popular track ‘Rubber Gloves’ on Rob da Bank’s BBC Radio 1 show.
Clive Meaker then successfully won funding from the BBC’s Urban Talent Bursary award scheme, which he used to fund the making of the bands debut album ‘A lesson from the Speaker’.

Following this funding triumph, Dr Meaker entered the Glastonbury Festival Unsigned Competition and were the outright winners of the Dance Music category. This gained them an interview with Huw Stevens on BBC Radio 1, a nod from the mighty Zane Lowe on his show and a prime time slot in the Dance village at Glastonbury Festival. The biggest achievement for the band, who are keen fans of the Glastonbury Festival, was to have Michael Eavis himself comment on how much he enjoyed the bands performance at Glastonbury.

“Fantastic!” – Michael Eavis

After winning the prized Glastonbury slot a flurry of gigs and festivals followed as the band released their first single 'Moving And Grooving’ in August 2007. The song featured Dr Meaker vocalist Lorna King and was mixed by Howie B at Miloco Studios, London. The track was released both on vinyl and digital and included a remix by Drum and Bass producer and friend of the band - Interface.

The debut album 'A Lesson From The Speaker' and the single “Bad Boy Calling” (Flightcase Recordings) were both released on 17th November 2008. The album was distributed by Absolute Distribution, the subsidery of the Universal music group.

"Oozing quircky funk from every corner 4/5" - iDJ magazine

The album received critical acclaim and was played on many Radio stations including BBC Radio 1, 1XTRA, BBC6, XFM and Jazz Fm. Music from the album was also featured on several TV programmes including Skins (Channel 4) and Come Dine with me (Channel 4).

Dr Meaker remixed a track for  William Orbit  in early '09 for his Optical Illusions album. They remixed Mr Fogg’s Moving Parts and The King Blues single “Headbutt”. Dr Meaker was then asked back to the King Blues camp and co-produced “We are Fucking Angry” and “Futures” for their 2011 album “Punk & Poetry” and remixed their single “Set the World on fire”.

  1. Thank you! It's great to have see so much information and hear music from some unfamiliar artists. I am going to be dashing around from one venue to another! Looking forward to a fantastic day.
